The initiative’s background and aim
With focus on the EU summit (ECOFIN) - involving EU’s Finance and Economics Ministers in Copenhagen (30-31 March 2012) - a broad initiative called “Change Now!” is established.
The aim of “Change Now!” is to put pressure on politicians with the clear message, that we need a transformation that meets the challenges of the present crises and divides its expenses justly.
The crises are not solved by continuing the current policy of reduction, but by kick-starting investments in education, environment and sustainable job creation. These messages will be executed through activities that seek to affect public opinion.
Thus “Change Now!” aims to create a broad popular pressure that helps the Danish Presidency to kick-start the economy and implement a different process for job creation with a green focus and an equal division of the crises’ burdens.
1. Alliances
At present the joined initiative consist of Byggefagenes Samvirke (trade union), LO Storkøbenhavn (trade union), Environmental and climate organizations (GNBO, Ecocouncil, DN etc.) and Network for Welfare and Democracy. Each player forms their own part of the campaign and mobilization, but stand together under the same umbrella organization “Change Now!”
Because of the initiatives broadness “Change Now!” only stands for the general messages concerning the injustice of the present division of the crises’ expenses and the need for a sustainable transition. This means that more concrete messages will be delivered by the single organizations involved in the initiative.
The initiative is open for other organizations and initiatives, that support the core message e.g. NGOs.
2. Activities
The initiative’s first activity is a conference on 28 March 2011 with the title ”Green growth with fair conditions”. The second activity is a manifestation on 29 March 2011 right before the EU Finance and Economics Ministers’ summit. An idea is to let each participating organization start out with their own manifestation in order to meet up with the remaining organizations as a much larger group.
All participating organisations mobilize and inform their own support base, but can find help from the initiatives’ secretariat (see below). In addition each organization can arrange additional activities in the period up to the summit.
3. Political basis
Europe stands in the mist of four crises: a general job crisis with growing unemployment, a youth crisis with exploding unemployment rates, an environmental crisis that undermines society more and more, and an economic crisis with roots in a deregulated finance sector.
Immediate action is needed to avert these crises. The expenses have so far been addressed to the wrong people as the accountable has been let off too easily. We can not accept that unemployment is rising all over Europe, that millions of Europeans witness the disappearance of their life foundation and that working conditions are under pressure, while we fail to solve the degradation of the environment (incl. climate change). We need a change – now – and by that a joint solution that creates a sustainable transition with green job opportunities, a fair chance to the youth and the prevention of a new financial crisis.
A justly solution to the crises, must be a top priority when EU’s Finance and Economics Ministers meet. It is the only way to ensure that Europe does not break in pieces.
